Definition of subject and predicate in English grammar
There are different parts of a sentence. And these
parts give each word a job. Every sentence needs two things: a subject and a predicate. Bur
what exactly a subject and a predicate is?
Subject
The subject of the sentence is what (or whom) the sentence is about.
Hack: Ask a question by who and the answer you got will be
the subject of the sentence.
Example:
- Mayuri is eating chocolates.
Who is eating chocolates?
Answer is Mayuri. Hence, Mayuri will be the subject of a
sentence.
Predicate
A predicate is the part of a sentence, or a clause, that tells what
the subject is doing or what the subject is.
Hack: Ask a question by what and the answer you got will be
the Predicate of the sentence.
Let’s take the same example:
Mayuri is eating chocolates.
Mayuri is doing what?
Answer is eating
chocolates. Hence, eating chocolates
will be the Predicate of a sentence.
Can you Identify Subject and Predicate in a Sentence?
- She watches movie.
Who watches movie?
Answer is she. Hence she will be the subject of a sentence.
And what she is doing?
Answer is watches movie. Hence, watches movie will be the Predicate
of a sentence.
