Types of Noun
There are 7 types of Nouns used in English language.
1. Proper Noun
2. Common Noun
3. Collective Noun
4. Abstract Noun
5. Material Noun
6. Countable Noun
7. Uncountable Noun
Let's have a look Proper Noun.
1. Proper Noun:
A proper noun is a specific name of a person, place, or thing.
Point to be noted - A proper noun is always capitalized.
Example -
Mayuri, Mango, Tomato, India, Ganga, Mount
Everest etc...
So, these are the specific name of a person,
place, or thing right?
It might be tricky to understand that what is Proper Noun and what is Common Noun. But I will differentiate it. So you can get the point clear.
2. Common Noun:
A Common Noun is
generic name of an item in a class or group.
Point to be noted – A Common Noun is not capitalized
unless appearing at the beginning of a sentence or in a title.
Example – girl, fruit, vegetable, country, river,
mountain etc…
So, these are the generic name of an item in a class or group right?
Differentiate Between Proper Noun and Common Noun
Now we will understand the difference between
Proper Noun and Common Noun.
So basically Proper noun is a specific part of
Common Noun. Did you see? Let’s take an example to understand more clearly.
Mango is a specific name of fruit right? There are so many fruits so here
fruits will be a group i.e. Common Noun and Mango is a specific name of a fruit
that’s why Mango is a Proper Noun.
Likewise Tomato is a specific name of vegetable.
So here vegetable will be a group i.e. Common Noun and Tomato is a specific
name of a vegetable that’s why Tomato is a Proper Noun.
