Simple past tense examples sentences

What is Simple Past Tense in English Grammar? 

Used to talk about things that happened or existed before now.

 

Words to recognize simple past:

Yesterday, Last Sunday, last week, Last year, a month ago etc…

 

Structure of Sentence:

Subject + Verb (Simple past) + Object.

 

Example:

  • Anil ate an apple yesterday.
  • He won the silver medal.
  • She backed a cake.
  • My Granny died last year.
  • I went to the theater last night.
  • I arrived in Geneva yesterday.
  • I played football yesterday.
  • He wrote a letter last night.

 

Simple past tense examples sentences

We use did to introduce Interrogative and Negative Sentences:

Interrogative Sentences:

  • Did you come garden?
  • Did she know to speak English?
  • Did he tell his Mom?
  • Did anyone steal your purse?
  • Did you sing a song?

 

Point to be noted:

We use bare form of verb while using did in the sentences.

 

Negative Sentences:

  • She did not go to school yesterday.
  • He did not play tennis.
  • He did not laugh at boy.
  • He did not study for the exam.

Wh Questions:

  • What did the girl have in her bag? (bare form of verb)
  • Who did he bring to the dance yesterday? (bare form of verb)
  • Who ate all the chocolates?
  • What did the director tell you? (bare form of verb)
  • What time did you go to bed? (bare form of verb)


When we use did in the sentence, we use bare form of verb.
